Beaches and Sunsets in Karimunjawa

Part of the Karimunjawa travel guide — see every topic in All Karimunjawa Guides.

The main island, Karimunjawa, has quiet beaches, small hills and mangrove forest, all easy to reach by scooter. Its western shore faces the open sea, which makes it the place for sunsets. Many beaches are almost empty on weekdays. A slow day here means a morning swim, a ride across the island and a sunset with a cold coconut.

Beaches on the main island

The best beaches on Karimunjawa island are on the west and north coasts. Tanjung Gelam has soft white sand, palm trees and shallow, clear water, with a few small cafes. Other beaches, such as Batu Topeng and Ujung Gelam, are quieter, with rocks and calm water. Some beaches charge a small entry or parking fee. Most have simple stalls selling drinks and snacks. The sea is generally calm in the dry season, but always check for currents before you swim far out, and there are usually no lifeguards.

Sunset spots

Tanjung Gelam is the most popular sunset beach. The sun drops into the sea straight ahead, and many island-hopping boats stop here at the end of the day. Arrive early to get a good spot. For a high view, ride up to Bukit Love, a small hill with a viewing area that looks over the island and the sea. Bring a torch or phone light for the ride back, because many roads are dark. Sunsets are often clearest in the dry season, when there are fewer clouds.

Mangroves and the north

The north of the main island and neighbouring Kemujan have areas of mangrove forest. A wooden walkway has allowed visitors to walk among the trees, with signs about the plants and birds, but check locally that it is open. Kemujan is joined to the main island by a short bridge, so you can ride there on a scooter. The roads are quiet, with small villages, coconut groves and fishing boats. The ride is a good half-day trip on a day when you do not take a boat.

Getting around

Renting a scooter is the easiest way to explore the main island and Kemujan. Your hotel can arrange one. The main road is paved, but some side roads are rough, steep or sandy, so ride slowly. Cars with drivers are also available for groups. Fuel is sold in small shops in bottles. Distances are short, but the island is hilly, and a ride from the town to the far north can take about an hour. Ride only if you are experienced, and wear a helmet.
