Karimunjawa

Karimunjawa is a group of 27 small islands in the Java Sea, about 80 km north of the port town of Jepara in Central Java. Most of the islands and the sea around them are a national park. Only a few islands have villages, and life is slow and simple. Days here follow the same easy rhythm: a boat trip to white-sand islands, snorkelling over coral reefs, and a quiet sunset on a western beach. In the evening, the town square on the main island fills with grilled fish stalls. Most visitors arrive by boat from Jepara, on a fast boat of about two to three hours or a slower car ferry of about five hours. The sea can be rough in the wet season, and boats may be cancelled, so allow spare days. The calm, dry months are the best time to come. Plan three or four nights, and bring enough cash.
