Getting There and Best Time in Bandung

Part of the Bandung travel guide — see every topic in All Bandung Guides.

Bandung is about 150 kilometres southeast of Jakarta. For years the trip meant two to three hours by train or a slow drive in heavy traffic. Since October 2023 the Whoosh high-speed train has cut the main part of the journey to under an hour. Bandung also has an airport in the city for domestic flights. Inside the city and in the hills, traffic is the main thing to plan for, especially on weekends and public holidays.

The Whoosh fast train

Whoosh is Indonesia's first high-speed railway. Trains run up to 350 km/h between Halim station in east Jakarta and Tegalluar station on the east side of Bandung, with stops at Karawang and Padalarang. The full trip takes about 35 to 45 minutes. From Padalarang, a connecting feeder train runs to the central Bandung station in about 20 minutes. From Tegalluar, use ride-hailing or a shuttle into the city, which can take 30 to 60 minutes in traffic. There are dozens of trips a day. Buy tickets in the official app, on the website or at the station.

Normal trains and roads

Regular trains such as the Argo Parahyangan run from Gambir and other Jakarta stations to Bandung station in the city centre. They take about 3 hours, but the ride through hills and valleys is very scenic. By road, the Cipularang toll road links Jakarta and Bandung in about 2.5 to 3 hours without traffic. On Friday evenings, weekends and long holidays it can take much longer. Shuttle minibuses run between Jakarta and Bandung many times a day from different pick-up points.

Airports

Husein Sastranegara Airport is inside the city, only a few kilometres from the centre, and it handles domestic flights to cities such as Denpasar, Surabaya and Medan. In 2026 the government began bringing larger jets back to Husein after years of limits. Kertajati International Airport is about 70 kilometres northeast, at least 1.5 hours by toll road, and has had very few regular flights. Routes change often, so check which airport your flight uses. For international arrivals, most people fly into Jakarta and take the fast train.

Best time and crowds

Bandung is mild all year, with daytime temperatures around 20 to 28 degrees and cool nights. The drier months are roughly June to September, with August usually the driest. This is the best time for crater lakes and viewpoints. From about November to March, rain falls most afternoons and fog is common in the hills. The bigger issue is crowds. Jakarta families arrive every Friday night, and on weekends roads to Lembang and Ciwidey can be jammed for hours. Visit the hills on weekdays and start early.
