Ciwidey Tea Country in Bandung

Part of the Bandung travel guide — see every topic in All Bandung Guides.

South of Bandung, the road climbs through the town of Ciwidey into the Rancabali highlands. Here the hills are covered in neat rows of tea bushes for kilometre after kilometre. The air is cool, the light is soft, and early mornings are often misty. This area pairs well with Kawah Putih crater lake, which is on the same road. It is a slower, greener side of Bandung, with tea walks, a lake, hot springs and simple mountain food.

The tea plantations

The Rancabali tea estate covers wide hills on both sides of the main road. Tea pickers work along the rows in the morning, and narrow paths cut between the bushes, so you can walk into the green. There are small parking spots and viewpoints where you can stop for photos. The best light is early morning, when mist lies in the valleys, or late afternoon. Some tea areas have small cafes where you can drink local tea and look over the hills. Please stay on the paths and do not pick the leaves.

Situ Patenggang lake

Situ Patenggang is a calm lake surrounded by tea hills and forest, a short drive from the Kawah Putih gate. Small wooden boats take visitors across the water to a little island, and you can walk along the shore. On weekends the lakeside is busy with families, food stalls and boat sellers. On a weekday morning it is quiet and peaceful. There are glamping tents and lodges near the lake if you want to wake up in the hills and see the tea fields before the day trippers arrive.

Hot springs and Ranca Upas

The volcanic ground in this area feeds several hot spring parks with warm pools, which feel great on a cold evening. Ranca Upas is a camping and nature area with a small deer park, where you can feed the deer, and open grassy fields for tents. Families often camp here on weekends, and it can get loud. Facilities are simple. Bring warm clothes for the night, because temperatures can drop low at this height. Ask at your lodge which hot spring park is clean and open.

Planning a day or a night

From Bandung the drive to Ciwidey takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, mostly because of traffic in the southern suburbs. A good plan is to leave very early, visit Kawah Putih first, then drive through the tea plantations to Situ Patenggang and end with a hot spring soak. If you have time, stay one night in the highlands. Roads are winding and fog can come down in the late afternoon, so avoid driving back late. A car with a driver is the easiest way to get around.
