Surf Camps and Retreats in Bali

Part of the Bali travel guide — see every topic in All Bali Guides.

Bali is the world's most developed surf-camp destination, and the format is well worked out: accommodation, two coached sessions a day, board and transport to whichever break is working, video analysis, and usually yoga and food included. It suits beginners and improvers far better than booking lessons ad hoc, because the coaches move you to the right wave for the tide and the swell rather than the one outside the hotel. Camps cluster in Canggu, Kuta, Uluwatu and Medewi, at very different prices.

How a camp works

A typical week: a dawn session before the wind, breakfast, theory or video review, an afternoon session at a different break, and yoga or stretching in between. Boards, transport, rash vests and insurance are included; food usually is. Group sizes of three or four to a coach are normal and two is better. The good camps track your progress across the week and adjust which break you go to, which is the whole value — matching a beginner to Kuta's forgiving sand bottom and an improver to Balangan or Medewi as they progress.

Where to base

Canggu is the busiest and most social, with a large scene around it and Batu Bolong as the home break — increasingly crowded but forgiving. Kuta and Legian are cheaper, less fashionable and objectively the easiest place to learn, with a long sand-bottomed break and space to get waves. Uluwatu camps suit intermediates moving onto reef. Medewi, on the west coast ninety minutes out, is the quiet option: a long mellow left over cobbles, few people, and a genuinely relaxed village scene that Canggu lost a decade ago.

Cost and what to check

A week at a budget camp with shared rooms runs 4–8 million rupiah; a mid-range camp with private rooms and a pool is 9–18 million; luxury surf retreats go well beyond. Check: the coach-to-guest ratio, whether coaches are qualified and insured, how many sessions a day and whether they are genuinely coached or supervised, board quality and range as you improve, and whether transport to other breaks is included. Ask what happens if the surf is flat, because a good camp has an answer and a bad one does not.

Season and practical notes

The west coast — Canggu, Kuta, Uluwatu, Medewi — works April to October when the trade winds are offshore. From November to March the east coast turns on and good camps relocate sessions to Sanur, Nusa Dua, Keramas and Serangan rather than cancelling. Bring reef booties if you will be on the Bukit, a rash vest with sun protection, and zinc. Reef cuts infect fast, so clean them properly the same day. And check your travel insurance covers surfing, which some policies exclude alongside motorcycling.
