Canggu Decoded in Bali

Canggu is the fastest-changed place on Bali and the most divisive. In 2015 it was paddy fields, a beach break at Batu Bolong and a handful of surf guesthouses; today it is a continuous strip of cafes, co-working spaces, gyms, tattoo studios and villa complexes running from Berawa to Pererenan. It is where the island's digital-nomad population concentrates, which makes it convenient, sociable and expensive, and has produced traffic on single-lane village roads that were never built for it.

The geography

Canggu is really four adjacent villages. Berawa is the southern, most developed end — Finns beach club, the big gyms, the newest villas. Batu Bolong is the middle and the centre of gravity: the main surf beach, Old Man's, the densest cafe strip and the worst traffic. Echo Beach (Batu Mejan) is west of that, quieter, with a rockier beach and a good sunset. Pererenan, further west again, is where the people who found Canggu too busy moved to and is now going the same way. Each is a five-minute scooter ride from the next and twenty in traffic.

What it is good at

Beginner-to-intermediate surf on a forgiving sand bottom, three hundred metres from wherever you are staying. Coffee and brunch of a standard that would hold up in Melbourne. Gyms and functional-fitness studios at a level well beyond the island's size. Co-working with reliable fibre. A social scene that is genuinely easy to break into if you are alone, because most people there are. And a rental market where a one-bedroom villa with a pool runs 8–20 million rupiah a month, which is what makes the whole thing work.

What it is bad at

The traffic is the real cost. The Batu Bolong shortcut and the Berawa road are single lanes with no pavement, and at five in the afternoon a two-kilometre journey takes forty minutes. Scooter accidents are frequent and the local clinics see a steady stream of "Canggu tattoos" — gravel rash from low-speed spills. The beach is grey sand with a strong rip. Prices are Bali's highest outside the luxury resorts. And in high season the village atmosphere that drew people is genuinely hard to find; for that, go to Amed, Sidemen or Munduk.

Doing it well

Stay in Pererenan or north of the Batu Bolong strip and you get the same access with half the noise. Move on a scooter, but wear a proper helmet and stay off the roads after midnight. Do the errands — laundry, groceries, the gym — before ten, when the roads are empty. Book restaurants: the good ones in Canggu now take reservations and fill. And treat it as a base rather than the destination; the point of Canggu is that Ubud is an hour away, Uluwatu is ninety minutes, and the boat to Nusa Lembongan leaves from an hour down the coast.
