The public option, and a big one. Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital is run by the Veterans Affairs Council, holds medical-centre status, and is the only hospital of that grade in the Kaohsiung and Pingtung region in public hands. Around 1,488 beds at Zuoying, with an international medical service centre that registers foreign patients at its own outpatient counter.
What it is known for
Being the public one. Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital is run by the Veterans Affairs Council of the Executive Yuan, and of the four hospitals holding medical-centre status across Kaohsiung and Pingtung it is the only one in public hands. It opened in 1990 and runs about 1,488 beds, with the full span of specialties, an emergency department that never closes and particular depth in cardiovascular medicine, orthopaedics and robotic surgery. Its international medical service centre is a real desk rather than a web page: foreign patients register at outpatient counter 12, and the centre answers on extension 75914 and at imc@vghks.gov.tw.
Who it suits
Travellers staying at the northern end of the city, around Lotus Pond and the Zuoying temples, and anyone who arrives in Kaohsiung on the high speed rail — those trains terminate at Zuoying, a short taxi ride away. It also suits anyone who would rather be treated in a state hospital, though in Taiwan the gap between public and non-profit foundation hospitals is far narrower than the public-private gulf elsewhere in the region. If English is the obstacle, ask at the desk for the international medical service centre by name.
Cost and insurance
Self-pay prices at the public rate, the lowest of the three hospitals on this page — though none of them is expensive by Western standards, and the difference between them matters less than the difference between Taiwan and almost anywhere a visitor is likely to have flown in from. Register first, be seen, then settle at the cashier on the way out; cash and cards both work. Direct billing to a foreign insurer is not something to expect here, so pay and claim, and ask the doctor for an English diagnosis certificate before you leave.
