It has 30 departments including emergency medicine, is a designated regional cancer hospital, opens its outpatient desk at 8am and on Saturday mornings, and states that urgent cases are handled around the clock — which makes it the practical choice for a visitor staying in the centre who needs a hospital but not an ambulance.
What it is known for
Being where the visitors are. Tonan sits on Kita 4-jo Nishi 7-chome, a five-minute walk from JR Sapporo Station and ten from Odori, closer to the hotel district than any other hospital of its size. It describes itself as an advanced acute-care hospital, with 300 beds — 294 general and six intensive care — and 30 departments including emergency medicine, and holds designations as a regional medical support hospital and a regional cancer-treatment hospital. It is run by the federation that manages hospitals for Japan’s national public servants, not by the city or a university.
Who it suits
The visitor whose problem is real but not a 119 call: a wound that needs closing, an infection, a chest complaint, a fracture already splinted at a resort clinic. The desk opens at 8am, earlier than the university hospitals, and on Saturday mornings when much of the city is shut. It suits an emergency less clearly than the two centres above — it states that urgent cases are covered around the clock, but it is not a designated critical-care centre, and severe trauma belongs elsewhere.
Cost and insurance
The hospital asks for a referral letter and charges the standard 7,700 yen to a first-visit patient who has none, plus 3,300 yen at a return visit once it has referred you back out. A visitor pays the entire bill, since Japanese national insurance does not cover you, and no direct billing of a foreign insurer is published. Pay at the cashier before leaving, keep the itemised receipt, and ask what the hospital charges for an English-language medical certificate — it is usually a separate, paid document.
