West of Sa Pa, the road climbs through Hoang Lien National Park and over the O Quy Ho pass — at roughly 50 km the longest mountain pass road in Vietnam, cresting near 2,000 m as it crosses from Lao Cai into Lai Chau province. It is the north's classic short motorbike ride: waterfalls on the way up, cloud pouring over the saddle, and enormous views back toward the Fansipan massif.
The Ride & the Views
From town it's roughly 15–18 km to the summit area, passing Silver Waterfall en route — an easy half-day return ride. The "Heaven's Gate" viewpoint near the top looks across a huge drop toward Fansipan, with cafés perched on the rim for a coffee at altitude. Cross to the Lai Chau side and a modern glass-skywalk attraction cantilevers out over the valley for those with steady nerves.
Riding It Safely
The tarmac is decent but the pass earns respect: fog can erase visibility in minutes, downhill hairpins hide trucks, and winter mornings occasionally ice over — this is one of the few corners of Vietnam that sees frost. Ride in daylight, check brakes and weather before setting out, and if you're not a confident rider, go with an easy-rider driver or a car; the views cost nothing extra.
