Bangkok grew up along the Chao Phraya, and the river is still its grandest avenue. After dark, dinner-cruise boats glide past the floodlit Grand Palace and the spires of Wat Arun with a buffet and live music on deck; by day the same water works as a transit corridor of express boats, cross-river ferries and long-tails. Riding it — either way — is essential Bangkok.

Evening cruises board mainly around ICONSIAM, River City and the Sathorn piers for roughly two-hour loops: buffet or set menus, a live band and the riverside landmarks lit like stage sets. Styles run from big party boats to converted teak rice barges for a quieter, more romantic table. Book a day or two ahead in high season, aim for an upper-deck rail seat, and double-check your boarding pier — it differs by operator.
Riding Like a Local
The Chao Phraya Express Boat lines run pier to pier for pocket change, and the blue-flag tourist boat adds hop-on-hop-off day passes with commentary — an easy way to link the old town, ICONSIAM and the riverside hotels. Cross-river ferries shuttle across for a few baht wherever piers pair up. Central Pier at Sathorn (BTS Saphan Taksin) is the hub; late afternoon on the water, with the light going gold, beats any taxi.
