The Most Luxurious Hotels in Koh Samui

Hillside villas, private islands, and sunset headlands on the Gulf of Thailand.

Samui’s coconut-plantation hills drop straight into the Gulf, which is why its best resorts are vertical: villas terraced down headlands with the sea filling every window. The island runs on a different clock from Phuket — when the Andaman coast is drowning in monsoon from May to October, Samui is often sunny, making it Thailand’s summer-holiday luxury island. Six resorts make our cut, from a twin-island hideaway to the amphitheatre of villas above Lamai.

Which resorts made the list?

Six properties, ranked. Between them they cover the island’s three luxury personalities: sunset west coast, breezy north-east headlands, and the offshore islands.

How much do they cost?

Samui’s top villas run $400–$800 to start — a touch below Phuket’s equivalents — with January–February and July–August the twin peaks. October and November are the bargain months, rain included.

*Indicative low-season opening rates per night for two, before taxes, mid-2026. They move with demand — always check current prices.

When should you book?

February to April is Samui’s prime: dry, hot, flat seas. Unlike the Andaman coast, June to August stays largely sunny — Europe’s school holidays make it a second peak. The Gulf’s short, sharp monsoon lands October to December.

The six, in detail

1Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui

Laem Yai headland · hillside pool villas · from ~$800/night

Sunset coastPrivate bayRum bar

A whole north-western headland of coconut grove, with villas stepped down the slope so each infinity pool spills into the sunset. The private bay below is Samui’s calmest swimming, CoCoRum mixes the island’s best cocktails around a beached long-tail boat, and the Muay Thai ring offers dawn training with a view. The benchmark on the island.

Don’t miss: the rum library — over a hundred bottles — after a beach barbecue.

2Cape Fahn Hotel

Twin private islands off Choeng Mon · villa estate · from ~$650/night

Private islandsTidal sandbarAdults-leaning

Two private islets linked to Samui by a sandbar you can walk at low tide — arrival is by boat or, at the right hour, barefoot across the sea floor. Every villa has a pool and a horizon view; dinners are set up on whichever beach the wind favors. As close to own-island fantasy as Thailand gets without a nine-figure yacht.

Don’t miss: timing the tide chart for the sandbar walk back from Samui at dusk.

3Six Senses Samui

Samrong headland, north tip · barefoot wellness · from ~$500/night

Panoramic decksDining on the RocksSpa

Twenty acres of wild headland where the villas keep their weathered-timber, grass-roof modesty so the view can do the talking — a 180-degree sweep over the gulf to Koh Phangan. Dining on the Rocks, its signature restaurant cantilevered off the cliff, remains Samui’s definitive special-occasion table.

Don’t miss: the sunset tasting menu on deck nine, feet dangling over the sea.

4Conrad Koh Samui

South-west cliffs · sunset pool villas · from ~$450/night

Five Islands viewAll-villaInfinity pools

Eighty villas bolted to a steep south-western cliff, every one aimed at the Five Islands and the day’s main event: sunset. Pools cantilever toward the horizon, the wine cellar is cut into the rock, and the resort’s remoteness — forty minutes from the airport — is precisely the point.

Don’t miss: Azure’s aperitivo hour as the sky goes tangerine behind the islands.

5Banyan Tree Samui

Lamai bay · villa amphitheatre · from ~$420/night

All-pool-villaRainforest spaPrivate bay

Eighty-eight pool villas arranged like a Greek amphitheatre down a jungled bowl to a private gold-sand bay. The signature Rainforest hydrotherapy circuit is the most elaborate spa experience on the island, and the funicular-style buggies mean the vertiginous site never costs you a climb.

Don’t miss: the Rainforest circuit — arrive an hour before your treatment.

6The Ritz-Carlton, Koh Samui

North-east coast, near Choeng Mon · estate resort · from ~$400/night

Swim reef58-acre estateFamily-friendly

A former coconut plantation turned 58-acre estate of suites and pool villas, built around its own snorkel-ready swim reef lagoon stocked as a marine sanctuary. The most complete all-round resort on the list — club lounge, kids’ programs, ten dining venues — while villas on the upper ridge keep honeymooners out of cannonball range.

Don’t miss: morning snorkeling in the sanctuary lagoon before breakfast.
