Sa Pa

Sa Pa is the high-altitude rice-terrace country in the far north, a few hours from the Chinese border. The terraces of Mu Cang Chai and Y Ty are some of the most dramatic agricultural landscapes in Asia, and the surrounding villages are home to the Hmong, Dao, and Tay ethnic minorities. Multi-day treks with a local guide between villages, sleeping in homestays, are the canonical experience. Go in September and October for the harvest gold; April and May for the flooded fields reflecting the sky. The Bac Ha Sunday market, a couple of hours east, is the canonical day trip for hill-tribe textiles.
