Bangkok loves a celebration, and its calendar swings from citywide water fights to glittering river nights. The big draws are joyful and very public: Songkran, the Thai New Year that turns whole streets into a soaking free-for-all, and Loi Krathong, when the Chao Phraya fills with candlelit floats. Add booming New Year countdowns, Chinatown's lunar new year, Pride parades, and a growing roster of music festivals, and there's almost always something on.
Songkran: The Water Festival
Every April, Bangkok marks the Thai New Year with Songkran — the world's biggest water fight. Locals and visitors arm themselves with buckets and super-soakers and take to the streets, with Silom and Khao San turning into euphoric, dripping block parties. Under the surface it's a gentle tradition about washing away the old year, but on the pavement it's pure fun in the pre-monsoon heat. Bring a waterproof pouch for your phone and expect to get thoroughly, gloriously drenched.
Loi Krathong & River Nights
Come the November full moon, Loi Krathong is Bangkok at its most photogenic. People float small lotus-shaped rafts of flowers and candles onto the Chao Phraya and the city's ponds, setting the water shimmering after dark. Riverside hotels, parks, and piers host the best viewing, often paired with music, food stalls, and fireworks. It's a calm, beautiful counterpoint to Songkran's chaos — a night to ride a river ferry and watch a thousand tiny lights drift by.
Countdowns, Lunar New Year & Music
Bangkok's New Year's Eve is a spectacle: massive countdowns and firework displays light up the riverside and the plazas outside the downtown malls, drawing enormous, festive crowds. Weeks later, Chinatown's Yaowarat Road erupts for Lunar New Year with lion dances, red lanterns, and street food. Throughout the year, international-scale music festivals, Pride events, and night markets keep the party going — proof that the city's celebration season never really ends.
