Madeira

An autonomous island in the Atlantic, six hundred kilometres off the coast of Morocco, Madeira is technically part of Portugal but feels like a different country — subtropical, mountainous, and known for its levada walks (irrigation channels with footpaths beside them that traverse the island). The capital, Funchal, has the famous wicker toboggan ride down from Monte. The cliff at Cabo Girao is one of the highest in Europe; the highest peaks (Pico Ruivo, Pico do Areeiro) above the cloud line have the most dramatic dawn views. The fortified Madeira wine is the regional drink.
