Getting Around and Transport in Siem Reap & Angkor Wat

Siem Reap's default vehicle is the remorque — a two-wheeled carriage towed behind a motorbike, canopy up, luggage strapped across the back — and for most visitors that is the whole transport plan. The town centre is flat and small enough to walk, but Angkor starts seven kilometres north and the main circuits run to seventeen and twenty-six kilometres, which is why almost everyone hires a driver by the day. The bigger change is the airport: since 2023, flights use a new field roughly an hour east of town.
Around town and out to the temples
PassApp and Grab both work in Siem Reap and price short hops honestly — usually a dollar or two across the centre in a metered rickshaw-style tuk-tuk. For Angkor, hire a driver for the day rather than trip by trip: a classic remorque for the small circuit typically runs around US$20–25, a little more for the grand circuit, and noticeably more for Banteay Srei or Beng Mealea. An air-conditioned car with driver is roughly US$40–55. Bicycles rent for a few dollars and suit the small circuit in cool season; e-bikes are widely available and easier in the heat.
Arriving and leaving
Siem Reap–Angkor International Airport opened in late 2023 near Sotr Nikum, some 40 to 50 kilometres east, replacing the old field beside the temples. Allow around an hour each way; hotel transfers and airport taxis generally sit in the US$25–35 range, with cheaper shared shuttles available. Overland, Phnom Penh is about five to six hours by express van or bus on National Road 6, and Battambang around three to four. Long-distance operators mostly pick up from their own offices near Sivatha Boulevard. Bus and van seats are easy to book a day ahead outside holiday weeks.
