Siem Reap's art scene grew out of a rebuilding project. After the 1990s, workshops opened here to retrain a generation in skills the Khmer Rouge years had broken, and that craft-first root still shows in what gets made. At Theam's House, a compound of quiet courtyards in Veal village on the western edge of town, the lacquer artist Lim Muy Theam shows contemporary work alongside a personal collection of Khmer objects, everything glowing red and gold under deliberately low light. Elsewhere the scene runs from serious commercial galleries near the river to design studios and small coworking spaces in Kandal Village.
Workshops, galleries and the circus
Theam's House is the anchor, and best visited in late afternoon when the lacquer catches the light. Artisans Angkor, on Stung Thmey Street in the centre, is a working training school — you walk through the stone-carving, silk-painting and lacquer studios before you reach the shop, and the apprentices will talk you through what they are doing. Batia Sarem, near the river, shows contemporary Cambodian painters at proper gallery prices. Kandal Village, the short boutique run on Hup Guan Street, concentrates ceramics, textiles and design shops within a few minutes' walk. For performance rather than objects, Phare, The Cambodian Circus, off Sok San Road, is the strongest live show in town.
How to build a day around it
Almost all of this sits inside a five-kilometre triangle, so a half-day with a tuk-tuk covers it — agree an hourly or half-day rate before you set off. A workable order is Artisans Angkor mid-morning, lunch and browsing in Kandal Village, Theam's House late afternoon, then Phare after dark; the circus usually runs one evening show and sells out in high season, so book ahead. Artisans Angkor usually runs a free shuttle to its silk farm at Puok, around 16 km west, where the mulberry groves, reeling sheds and looms make a genuinely absorbing hour. Most galleries close for a long lunch, so plan around it.
