West Lake by Bike in Hanoi

Part of the Hanoi travel guide — see every topic in All Hanoi Guides.

West Lake, or Ho Tay, is the largest lake in Hanoi. Its shore is about 17 km long, and a road and path run most of the way around it. A bike ride around the lake is one of the most relaxing things to do in the city. You pass lotus ponds, garden cafés, quiet lanes and wide views of the water. This guide covers the route, how to get a bike and where to watch the sunset.

The route

A full loop of West Lake is about 15 to 17 km, depending on your path. On a bike it takes about one to two hours, plus stops. Most people start at Thanh Nien road, the straight road between West Lake and the smaller Truc Bach Lake. From there you can go either way around. The east and north sides pass the Tay Ho area, with many cafés, restaurants and small hotels. The west side is quieter and has more open views. Some parts share the road with motorbikes and cars, so ride slowly and stay on the right. The lake is flat, so the ride is easy for most people.

Getting a bike

Many hotels in the Old Quarter and Tay Ho lend or rent bicycles. There are also rental shops near the lake. Hanoi also has a public bike share system with stations around the city, including near West Lake. You use a phone app to unlock a bike and pay. Check the app before you go, because systems and rules can change. Electric bikes are also available in some places. Ask for a lock and check the brakes before you leave. The Old Quarter is about 2 to 3 km from the lake. If you do not want to ride in city traffic, take a Grab to the lake and start there.

Truc Bach Lake

Truc Bach is a small, calm lake beside West Lake. A walking path goes all the way around it, and there are shady benches under the trees. The area is known for pho cuon, which is soft rice sheets rolled around beef and herbs, and for pho chien phong, which is fried puffed rice noodles. Many small restaurants serve these dishes along the lake. In the evening, families come out to walk and chat. You can also rent swan pedal boats in some places. Truc Bach is a good place to start or finish your ride with a meal.

Sunset spots

West Lake faces west across open water, so sunsets can be beautiful. Thanh Nien road is a popular place to stop and watch the sky turn orange behind the water. Many cafés on the east side have terraces or rooftops with a lake view. Order a drink and wait for the light. The north side near the Nhat Tan area has wide views and fewer people. In summer, lotus flowers bloom in ponds near the lake, usually around June and July. On clear days in autumn, the evening light is soft and the air is cooler. Bring a light jacket in winter.

Tips for the ride

Early morning and late afternoon are the best times to ride. The midday sun is strong for much of the year. Carry water, sun cream and a phone with a map. Traffic is lighter on weekend mornings. If you get tired, you can easily stop and take a Grab back to your hotel. The Tay Ho area has many international restaurants and bakeries, which are good for a long breakfast. Air quality in Hanoi can be poor on some winter days, so check an air quality app before a long ride. The cooler, drier months from about October to April are the most pleasant.
