Waterfalls Guide in Siquijor

Part of the Siquijor travel guide — see every topic in All Siquijor Guides.

Siquijor is a small island with green hills, forests and clear rivers. Its waterfalls are some of the prettiest in the central Philippines, with turquoise water and calm pools for swimming. The most famous is Cambugahay Falls. This guide covers the main falls and nature stops, the best time to visit and how to stay safe.

Cambugahay Falls

Cambugahay Falls is in the town of Lazi, in the south of the island. It has three levels of falls and pools, with bright turquoise water. You walk down a flight of stone steps from the road to reach it. There are rope swings over the main pool, and local guides can show you how to use them safely. A small entrance or parking fee is collected. Go early in the morning, before tour groups arrive. After heavy rain, the water can turn brown and the current gets stronger.

Lugnason Falls

Lugnason Falls is in San Juan, on the west side of the island. It is smaller and quieter than Cambugahay, with a single fall into a deep, green-blue pool. You reach it by a short walk from the road. Some people jump from the rocks into the pool, but check the depth first and only jump if you are a confident swimmer. It is a good place to cool off on a hot day. Because it is close to the main beach area, it is easy to visit in the afternoon.

The old balete tree

In Lazi, on the coastal road, stands a huge balete tree, a type of strangler fig. It is believed to be several hundred years old. Its roots hang down like curtains, and a small spring flows from its base into a pool. Small fish in the pool nibble at your feet if you sit with your feet in the water, like a natural fish spa. There are stalls selling drinks and souvenirs. It is a short stop, but it is popular and easy to combine with Cambugahay Falls.

Other nature stops

Siquijor has smaller falls and springs around the island. Capilay Spring Park in San Juan is a public pool fed by spring water, popular with local families. Mount Bandilaan, the highest point of the island, is inside a natural park with forest trails, a viewpoint and butterflies. Guiwanon Spring Park, near Siquijor town, has wooden walkways through a mangrove forest. These places are quiet and cheap to visit, and they show a softer side of the island away from the beaches.

Tips for visiting

The best time to visit the falls is in the dry season, from about December to May, when the water is clear and blue. After heavy rain, the water can be brown and fast. Wear water shoes, as rocks can be slippery. Bring cash for small entrance and parking fees. Do not use soap or shampoo in the pools. Take all your rubbish with you. Weekends and holidays are busier, so visit on a weekday morning if you can. Follow any signs or instructions from local guides.
