Nature Day Trips in Manila

Part of the Manila travel guide — see every topic in All Manila Guides.

When Manila feels too hot and busy, nature is not far away. Within a few hours you can reach cool ridges, rivers, waterfalls, mountains and a volcanic crater lake. Many trips can be done in one day if you leave early. This guide lists popular day trips from the city and how to plan them.

Tagaytay and Taal

Tagaytay is a cool town on a ridge about 60 kilometres south of Manila. It looks down on Taal Lake and Taal Volcano, one of the most active volcanoes in the Philippines. The town is known for viewpoints, cafés and bulalo, a beef soup. The trip takes about 1.5 to 3 hours each way, depending on traffic. Taal has alert levels, set by PHIVOLCS, the national volcano agency. Always check the current alert level before you go, because it can affect air quality and access to some areas.

Masungi Georeserve

Masungi Georeserve is a protected area in Rizal province, east of Manila. Trails lead through forest and over sharp limestone rocks, with rope bridges, hanging nets and viewing decks built into the landscape. It is a conservation project, so visitor numbers are limited. You must book in advance on its official website, and walk-ins are not allowed. Trails are led by guides. Wear good shoes. Gloves can help on the sharp rocks. The drive takes about 1.5 to 2 hours from Manila.

Rivers and hills in Rizal

Rizal province, just east of Metro Manila, has many green hills, rivers and small waterfalls. Mount Daraitan in Tanay is a popular day hike, with a steep climb and wide views. Many hikers combine it with a swim at Tinipak River, known for its white rocks and clear water. Local guides are required and you must register at the start. Rivers can rise quickly after rain, so do not swim during or after heavy storms. Start very early to avoid the midday heat.

Mount Pinatubo

Mount Pinatubo is a volcano north of Manila that erupted in 1991. Today, visitors take a 4x4 ride across wide ash fields and then hike to a blue-green crater lake. It is a long day trip, usually leaving Manila before dawn. Access depends on permits and conditions, and trips have sometimes been suspended. Tours must be booked with registered operators. Always check the current status with the local tourism office or your tour company before you plan this trip. Clark, in Pampanga, is a good place to stay the night before.

Planning tips

Leave Manila very early, often before 5 am, to beat traffic and heat. Many nature sites need advance booking, a registered guide or a permit, so check rules first. The dry season, from about December to May, is best for hiking. From about June to October, typhoons and heavy rain can close trails and roads. Bring water, sun cream, a hat and a light rain jacket. Grab can take you to some places, but a hired car or a tour is easier for most.
