Weather and Best Season in Batanes
Part of the Batanes travel guide — see every topic in All Batanes Guides.
Weather shapes every trip to Batanes. The islands sit in open sea, so wind, waves and rain decide if flights fly, if boats run and how far you can see. The good news is that the dry season is very pleasant. Choose your dates carefully and you will have a much easier and more beautiful trip.
March to June: the best months
The best time for most visitors is roughly March to June. Skies are often clear, the hills are green, the sea is calmer and flights run more reliably. April is usually the driest month. This is also the busiest season, especially during the school summer holidays, so flights and rooms fill up early. Days are warm and sunny, and the sun is strong on the open hills, so plan outdoor time for early morning and late afternoon. Even in these months, a windy day can stop the boats, so stay flexible.
July to November: rain and typhoons
From about July to November, Batanes gets more rain, and typhoons can pass near the islands. August is usually the wettest month. During a storm, flights and boats stop, power can go out and you may need to stay indoors for a day or more. People in Batanes are well prepared, and the stone houses show how long they have lived with these storms. Still, this is not the best time for a short holiday. If you do go, follow local advice and the weather service, and leave many spare days.
December to February: wind and cool air
In the northern winter, a strong and steady wind blows from the northeast. Batanes feels cooler than the rest of the Philippines, and nights can be cold enough for a jacket. Skies may be grey, and the sea is often rough, which can cancel boats to Sabtang and delay flights. The hills can look dramatic in this light, and there are fewer visitors. But plan for lost days, bring warm layers and a windproof jacket, and keep your schedule open.
Daily weather tips
Weather in Batanes can change within an hour. A clear morning can turn into strong wind and rain by the afternoon. Start your sightseeing early, when the light is soft and the sea is calm. Keep a light rain jacket and a dry bag with you every day. Wind can be strong on the cliffs and hills, so stay away from the edges. Drink water and use sunscreen, as the breeze hides how strong the sun is. Ask your guesthouse each evening about the next day, especially before a boat trip or a flight.
