Budget in Malacca

Malacca is inexpensive, with one large caveat: accommodation prices swing by a factor of two between midweek and weekend. Food is cheap, the historic core is walkable so transport is close to free, and most of the significant sights are either free or charge under twenty-five ringgit. A backpacker manages on 80–130 ringgit a day midweek; a comfortable trip with a heritage hotel and restaurant meals runs 250–500. Add fifty to a hundred per cent for a Saturday night.
Accommodation
Midweek, a hostel bed in a Chinatown shophouse is 40–70 ringgit, a mid-range hotel room 120–250, and a boutique heritage townhouse 200–450. From Friday afternoon those figures rise sharply — often doubling — and the better places book out weeks ahead. School holidays, Chinese New Year and long weekends compound it further. The single largest saving available in Malacca is simply choosing Tuesday over Saturday, which changes nothing about the city except the crowds and the price.
Food
A hawker or coffee-shop plate is 7–15 ringgit. Chicken rice balls are 8–15. Cendol is 4–8. Satay celup is charged by the stick and typically works out at 25–45 ringgit a head. A Nyonya restaurant main is 20–45, and a full Peranakan dinner for two 100–200. Seafood at the Portuguese Settlement is 60–120 for two. The Jonker night market feeds you for 20–35 ringgit of assorted snacks. Eating exclusively at coffee shops and the market costs 35–55 ringgit a day.
Transport and attractions
The bus from Kuala Lumpur is 12–20 ringgit; from Singapore 45–80. Melaka Sentral to the core is 12–20 by Grab or a couple of ringgit on town bus 17. Within the core, nothing costs anything because you walk. A trishaw is 40–60 for a half-hour. The river cruise is 25–30. Museums are 10–25 each and several of the best sights — St Paul's, Porta de Santiago, the temples, the riverside — are free. A day of sightseeing rarely exceeds 60 ringgit in admissions.
Where money goes
Weekend accommodation, and the multiplication of small museum tickets. Malacca has over twenty museums in the core, most charging 5–25 ringgit, and buying into all of them adds up quickly for diminishing returns — three or four good ones is the right number. Alcohol is expensive as everywhere in Malaysia, at 15–30 ringgit for a beer. Beyond that, this is one of the cheapest UNESCO World Heritage cities anywhere, and two nights midweek is genuinely inexpensive.
