Perfect 3 Day Itinerary in Langkawi

Langkawi's main sights sit on opposite coasts of a thirty-kilometre island, so the itinerary is really about pairing things geographically. Three days with a hire car covers everything worth doing: the cable car and the west, Kilim's mangroves and the north-east, and a day on the water or the beaches. The recurring rules are to start early — the summit clouds over and the sea builds through the day — and to keep the middle of the day for lunch, a pool or a spa.
Day 1: the west
Be at the cable car for opening: the summit is clearest first thing and the queue builds from about ten. Ride to the top, walk the SkyBridge, take the SkyGlide if the heat is against you. Then Telaga Tujuh, ten minutes away, for the waterfall and the pools — go up the steps early rather than at noon. Lunch at Telaga Harbour. Afternoon on the beach at Pantai Kok or back at Cenang, and sunset from the beach with dinner on the strip.
Day 2: the north-east
Drive to Kilim jetty for a morning boat or, better, a kayak through the mangroves: the karst channels, the Hole in the Wall, the bat cave and the fish farms, with a firm no to eagle feeding. Three to four hours. Then continue to Tanjung Rhu on the northern tip for the island's best beach and the low-tide sandbar, with a late lunch there. Drive back along the north coast road, stopping at Temurun waterfall, and end the day at Datai Bay if you want the rainforest.
Day 3: water or shopping
Two options. Water: the Pulau Payar Marine Park day trip, leaving in the morning and returning mid-afternoon, for the only genuinely good snorkelling in the area — or a three-island hopping tour if you would rather have variety than coral. Land: Kuah for the duty-free shopping and Eagle Square, the paddy-field back roads and Laman Padi, and a guided night walk in the evening, which is the best wildlife activity on the island and is usually overlooked.
Variations
With a fourth day, add a guided night walk and a proper rainforest morning at Datai, or take the ferry across to Koh Lipe in Thailand during the Thai season. With children, swap the Pulau Payar trip for the Underwater World aquarium and the beach, and keep the cable car for a clear morning. If you are here mainly to relax, do the cable car and Kilim on two mornings and spend the rest at the beach — that is a perfectly good use of Langkawi.
