Perfect 4 Day Itinerary in Kuching (Sarawak)

Kuching's advantage is that almost everything worth doing is within ninety minutes of a small, walkable city. Four days covers the old town, the orangutans at Semenggoh, a full day at Bako, and a night in a longhouse, without ever moving hotel. The one thing that does not fit is Mulu, which needs a flight and two or three days of its own. This itinerary assumes a base in the old town and a mixture of Grab, tours and one organised overnight.
Day 1: the city
Kolo mee or Sarawak laksa for breakfast at a Chinatown coffee shop — both are morning food and the good shops sell out. The Borneo Cultures Museum for two to three hours, which is the best possible introduction to the state. Lunch on Carpenter Street. Afternoon along Main Bazaar's antique shops and India Street, then a tambang boat across the river to Fort Margherita and the Brooke Gallery, and a walk through the Malay kampungs. Back for sunset on the waterfront and the night market.
Day 2: orangutans and a park
Semenggoh for the morning feeding session — forty minutes out, strictly timed, and worth going even though sightings are not guaranteed. Then, depending on energy: Kubah National Park for the palms and a waterfall, or the Annah Rais Bidayuh longhouse for an afternoon visit, or back to the city for the older museums. Evening: a Santubong estuary cruise for Irrawaddy dolphins, proboscis monkeys in the mangroves and fireflies after dark, which is the best-value excursion in Kuching.
Day 3: Bako
A full day, and ideally an overnight. Bus or Grab to Bako village, register, and take the boat across — twenty minutes, tide-dependent. Walk the Telok Pandan Kecil trail for the clifftop view over the sea stack, about ninety minutes each way, then the Lintang loop across the heath plateau if the heat allows. Proboscis monkeys and bearded pigs around headquarters in the late afternoon. If you stayed, a night walk and an early morning before the day boats arrive.
Day 4: a longhouse
The thing most visitors skip and most remember. An organised overnight to an Iban longhouse on the Lemanak or Skrang rivers — a drive, a longboat, an afternoon in the community, dinner, and an evening on the veranda with tuak and music. Or, if a night is not possible, Annah Rais as a day visit. With more time, a fifth and sixth day gets you Mulu's caves by air, or Gunung Gading if a Rafflesia is open, or the Kelabit Highlands at Bario.
