Kuala Lumpur International Airport is fifty kilometres south of the city and handles most of Malaysia's international traffic across two terminals. KLIA Terminal 1, opened in 1998 to a Kisho Kurokawa design, is the full-service terminal with a satellite building reached by aerotrain. Terminal 2, opened in 2014, was built for AirAsia and handles most low-cost traffic. They are fifteen minutes apart and connected by train and shuttle bus — but a connection between them is not a transfer, and that trips people up.
Getting to the city
KLIA Ekspres is the fastest: twenty-eight minutes non-stop from Terminal 1 to KL Sentral, around 55 ringgit one way, with trains every twenty to thirty minutes, and it also serves Terminal 2. KLIA Transit is the same line with intermediate stops, taking about thirty-five minutes for less money. Airport coaches to KL Sentral or Terminal Bersepadu Selatan take about an hour for 12–15 ringgit and run through the night. Grab is 80–120 ringgit and forty-five to seventy-five minutes depending on traffic. Book the express online for a discount.
Connecting between terminals
This is the thing to understand. If you arrive at Terminal 1 and depart from Terminal 2 on a separate ticket — which is common when combining a full-service airline with AirAsia — you must clear immigration, collect your bags, take the train or shuttle between terminals, and check in again. Allow three hours minimum, more with checked baggage. The KLIA Ekspres runs between the terminals in three minutes. A single through-ticket on connected carriers is a different matter and is handled airside.
In the airport
Terminal 1's satellite building has a small indoor rainforest atrium, which is a genuine feature rather than a marketing line, along with reasonable lounges and shopping. Terminal 2 is functional and considerably plainer, with a large shopping mall attached at gateway@klia2. Both have transit hotels — Sama-Sama Express in Terminal 1, Capsule and other options in Terminal 2 — bookable in blocks of hours, which is useful for the long night connections that are common here. Free wi-fi throughout, prayer rooms, and 24-hour food.
Practical notes
Malaysia requires arriving travellers to complete a digital arrival card online in the days before travel; do it before you fly, as it saves time and is checked. Immigration queues at Terminal 1 can be long at peak arrival banks. Duty-free allowances on alcohol are relevant given how heavily it is taxed locally. Ground transport touts operate in the arrivals hall — use the official taxi counter, the train, or Grab from the designated pick-up level. And Subang airport, much closer to the city, handles some regional turboprop services, so check which airport your ticket says.
