Legoland and Family Parks in Johor Bahru and Desaru

Legoland Malaysia Resort opened in 2012 as the first Legoland park in Asia. It is in Iskandar Puteri, a newer district on the western side of Johor Bahru, close to the Second Link to Singapore. The resort has three parts next to each other: the main theme park, a large water park and the Sea Life aquarium. There is also a Legoland Hotel, so families can stay right at the gate. The park is made mainly for children aged about 2 to 12.

The theme park

The main park has several themed areas with gentle rides, small roller coasters, driving schools for kids and many hands-on building zones. A highlight is Miniland, where famous buildings and city scenes from across Asia are made from millions of Lego bricks. Young children can earn a mini driving licence after a short drive in a little car. Older kids like the roller coasters and the water play areas. Most rides are short and safe for small children, so it is not a park for big thrill rides. Shade is limited and the sun is strong, so bring hats, sunscreen and water. Allow a full day.

Water park and Sea Life

The water park sits next to the theme park and needs its own ticket or a combo ticket. It has many water slides, a lazy river where you float on Lego-style rafts, a wave pool and splash areas for toddlers. You can build floating Lego shapes and watch them drift along. Sea Life Malaysia is an indoor aquarium with tanks of fish, rays, sharks and other sea life. It is cool and dry, so it is a good choice when it rains or in the hot middle of the day. Many families do the theme park one day and the water park and aquarium the next.

Legoland Hotel

The Legoland Hotel stands at the entrance to the theme park. The rooms have themes such as pirates, kingdoms and adventure, and they include bunk beds for children. There are Lego building areas in the lobby and play areas around the hotel. Staying here means you can walk to the park, take a break in your room at lunch and go back in the afternoon. It is popular in school holidays, so book early. There are also other hotels and serviced apartments nearby in Iskandar Puteri, often at lower rates.

Tips for the day

Arrive before opening time, because queues are shortest in the first hour. Weekdays outside school holidays are the quietest days. Malaysian and Singapore school holidays both make the park busy. Buy tickets online ahead, as online prices are often lower than at the gate. Rain showers are common in the afternoon, and some rides close during lightning. Food is sold inside, and there are more restaurants at the nearby Mall of Medini. Opening days and hours change by season, and the park may close some weekdays, so check the official website before you go.

Getting to Legoland

Legoland is about 30 to 40 minutes by car from central Johor Bahru when traffic is light. From Singapore, the fastest route is often by car or coach over the Second Link, which comes out close to Iskandar Puteri. Some coaches run from Singapore to Legoland, and there are local buses from JB Sentral and Larkin bus terminal. Ride-hailing apps such as Grab work well in Johor and are easy for families with luggage. Check bus times before you go, because the last buses back can leave early in the evening.
