Where to Stay in Ipoh

Ipoh's accommodation transformed in the 2010s, when the old town's pre-war shophouses started being converted into boutique hotels and design hostels. The result is a small but genuinely good heritage hotel scene at prices well below George Town's for equivalent rooms, concentrated in a walkable old town. New Town, across the river, has the conventional business hotels. Weekends fill with visitors from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore and rates rise accordingly.
The old town
Converted shophouses around Jalan Sultan Yussuf, Concubine Lane and the surrounding grid: design hostels from 40–90 ringgit, boutique hotels 130–350, and a handful of larger heritage properties above that. Several keep the original tiled floors, air wells and timber staircases. You can walk to the murals, the heritage buildings, the coffee shops and the railway station. This is the right choice for a one- or two-night visit and there is no real argument for anywhere else.
New Town and beyond
Across the Kinta river, New Town holds the conventional mid-range and business hotels at 120–300 ringgit, along with much of the food including the bean sprout chicken shops and the dim sum halls. It is ten minutes' walk from the old town. Further out, the Tambun area north of the city has resorts attached to the Lost World theme park and its natural hot springs, which suit families. Kampar and Gopeng to the south have heritage guesthouses for the caving and rafting.
Practicalities
Book ahead for weekends, Chinese New Year and school holidays; Ipoh is a two-hour weekend destination from Kuala Lumpur and fills. Rates roughly double from Friday. Shophouse rooms vary enormously — ask about windows, since the building type produces windowless interior rooms, and about street noise on Concubine Lane. A tourism tax per room per night applies. Parking in the old town is limited, which is another argument for arriving by train.
Using Ipoh as a base
Ipoh works well as a base for Perak: the Cameron Highlands are two hours east, Taiping and Kuala Kangsar under an hour north, Kellie's Castle and Gua Tempurung twenty to thirty minutes south, and Penang and Kuala Lumpur both two hours by train. For a peninsular Malaysia itinerary that runs Kuala Lumpur–Cameron Highlands–Penang, inserting two nights in Ipoh costs almost nothing in travel time and adds the best breakfast in the country.
