Perfect 10 Day Itinerary in Borneo (Sabah)

Sabah's three headline experiences — climbing Mount Kinabalu, wildlife on the Kinabatangan, and diving at Sipadan — sit in three different corners of a state the size of Ireland, and each needs advance booking. Ten days covers all three if you fly between them and accept two travel days. The permits dictate the order: book Kinabalu first, because its capped permits are the least flexible element, then build the rest around whatever date you are given.
Days 1–4: Kota Kinabalu and the mountain
Arrive in KK, spend a day acclimatising and eating — the seafood night market, hinava, the Sabah State Museum, sunset from the waterfront — and take a half day on the Tunku Abdul Rahman islands. Then two hours by road to Kinabalu Park, a night at Kundasang, and the two-day climb: Timpohon Gate to Laban Rata, a two a.m. summit push to Low's Peak for sunrise, and back down. Recover with a soak at the Poring hot springs and the canopy walkway on the way back.
Days 5–7: Sandakan and the Kinabatangan
Fly to Sandakan, forty-five minutes rather than seven hours by road. A day at Sepilok covering the orangutan centre, the sun bear sanctuary and the Rainforest Discovery Centre's canopy walkway. Then two to three hours by road to Sukau or Bilit on the Kinabatangan for two nights: dawn and dusk river cruises for proboscis monkeys, hornbills, macaques and, with luck, orangutans and pygmy elephants, plus an oxbow lake and the Gomantong caves' bat exodus.
Days 8–10: Semporna and the reef
Fly or drive to Tawau, then transfer to Semporna and out to Mabul or Kapalai. Two or three nights of diving: a Sipadan permit day for the barracuda tornado, turtles and sharks at Barracuda Point, and the rest on Mabul's muck sites, which photographers often rate higher. If you do not dive, snorkel Sibuan and Mantabuan and climb the Bohey Dulang crater rim, which is the best view in the state. Fly home from Tawau or back via KK.
Variations
With fourteen days, add Danum Valley — three nights of primary rainforest with the best guides in Malaysia — between Sandakan and Semporna. If you are not climbing Kinabalu, substitute the Klias river proboscis and firefly cruise and the Tip of Borneo in the north. If diving is the whole point, spend a week at Mabul rather than three nights. And if you have a week rather than ten days, do the mountain and the Kinabatangan and leave Sipadan for a dedicated diving trip.
