Getting There in West Sumatra

West Sumatra's main gateway is Minangkabau International Airport, north of Padang city on the coast. Most visitors do not stay in Padang. They go straight up into the highlands to Bukittinggi, about 90 km away by road. The trip takes about two to three hours, depending on traffic. You can go by private car, shared minivan, or part of the way by train.
Flying in
Minangkabau International Airport is the only major airport in the province. Most flights come from Jakarta, with many departures every day, and there are also flights from several other Indonesian cities. Some international flights connect with Kuala Lumpur, but routes change, so check before you book. The airport is modern and easy to use, with ATMs, SIM card counters and food. Taxis and ride-hailing pickups wait outside arrivals. If you land late in the day, it is easier to sleep one night in Padang and drive up to the highlands in the morning, when the road is clear and the views are best.
The airport train
A train line runs from the airport station into Padang city. This service, called Minangkabau Express, is cheap, clean and avoids traffic, and it is the easy choice if you stay in Padang. A second train, called Lembah Anai, runs on the same line and continues inland to Kayu Tanam, at the foot of the hills. From the airport, that trip takes about one hour and ten minutes, and there are only a few trains a day. From Kayu Tanam, you still need a minibus or car for the rest of the climb to Bukittinggi. Check the current train times at the station or in the KAI Access app.
By road to Bukittinggi
Most visitors go by road. A private car with a driver is the most comfortable choice, and it can stop at viewpoints on the way. Shared minivans, called travel, are cheaper. They pick you up at the airport or your hotel and drop you at your hotel in Bukittinggi, but they may stop for other passengers. Taxis and ride-hailing cars also make the trip. The road climbs through the Anai Valley, past a tall waterfall right next to the road, then through Padang Panjang. Traffic can be slow on weekends and holidays, so allow extra time.
Moving around the region
Bukittinggi is the hub for the highlands. From there, day trips reach Harau Valley, Lake Maninjau and Lake Singkarak, each one to one and a half hours away. The simplest way is to hire a car with a driver for the day through your hotel. Scooter rental is common too, but mountain roads are steep and busy, so only ride if you are experienced and have the right licence. Local minibuses link the towns, but they are slow and do not stop at viewpoints. For a loop trip, you can also go back to the airport by a different road, for example past Lake Singkarak and Solok.
