The Toba Supereruption in Lake Toba

Around seventy-four thousand years ago, the Toba volcano in northern Sumatra produced one of the largest eruptions known from the geological record — a category eight event on the volcanic explosivity index, estimated at around two thousand eight hundred cubic kilometres of erupted material, roughly two orders of magnitude larger than the 1980 Mount St Helens eruption. It laid ash metres deep across the Indian subcontinent, injected enormous quantities of sulphur into the stratosphere, and left the hundred-kilometre caldera that the lake now fills.
What happened
The eruption emptied a vast magma chamber, and the roof of that chamber collapsed into the void, producing a caldera roughly a hundred kilometres by thirty. Ash from the event — the Youngest Toba Tuff — is found in deep-sea cores across the Indian Ocean and in sediments in India, where a layer several metres thick provides a precise time marker used by archaeologists. The lake filled the caldera afterwards; Samosir was pushed up later as magma pressure resumed beneath the floor, which is why an island rises steeply in the middle.
The bottleneck hypothesis
In the 1990s it was proposed that the eruption caused a volcanic winter severe enough to crash the global human population to a few thousand breeding individuals, producing the genetic bottleneck visible in modern human DNA. It is a compelling story and it is genuinely contested: later work at archaeological sites in India and southern Africa found human occupation continuing across the ash layer with no obvious break, and climate modelling has produced cooling estimates far smaller than the original claim. The bottleneck is real; whether Toba caused it is not settled.
Reading the landscape
Once you know what happened, the lake stops looking like a lake. The steep walls on every side are the caldera rim. Samosir's abrupt rise is resurgent uplift. The hot springs at Pangururan and around Mount Pusuk Buhit are the remaining heat. The Sipiso-piso waterfall at the northern end drops off the caldera edge into the basin. And the flat, extraordinarily fertile plateau country around Berastagi and the Karo highlands to the north is built on the ash. The whole of North Sumatra's highland geography is Toba's aftermath.
Is it still active
Toba is classed as a dormant supervolcano rather than an extinct one: magma remains beneath the caldera, which is what drives Samosir's continued slow uplift and the hot springs. There is no indication of an impending eruption and nothing to plan around. What is active nearby is Sinabung, about two hours north, which reawakened in 2010 after four hundred years of quiet and erupted repeatedly through the 2010s, killing people and displacing tens of thousands — a reminder that this is a live volcanic province.
