Best Time to Visit in Flores

Flores sits in the dry belt of eastern Indonesia and gets substantially less rain than Java or Bali, which is why much of it is savanna and dry forest rather than jungle. The dry season runs roughly April to October and the wet season November to March. The distinction matters more here than in most of Indonesia for one practical reason: the Trans-Flores Highway is cut into steep unstable slopes, and landslides during the rains close sections with no notice.

The dry season

April to October. Reliable sun, clear mornings at Kelimutu, calm seas for the boat trips off Labuan Bajo and Riung, and a road that stays open. It is also hot and dusty on the coasts and brown across the lowlands, while the highlands around Ruteng, Bajawa and Moni stay cool and green because of altitude. June to September is the core, and July and August bring the Komodo peak to Labuan Bajo — though the rest of the island stays quiet even then.

The wet season

November to March, peaking January and February. Rain arrives as heavy afternoon and evening downpours; mornings are frequently clear. The island turns green, the waterfalls run and prices fall. The costs are significant: landslides close the highway, the Wae Rebo trail becomes a mudslide, Kelimutu is clouded most mornings, boat trips off the west are cancelled, and Labuan Bajo's Komodo operators reduce services. It is travellable with flexibility and a bad choice for a fixed itinerary.

Timing specific things

Kelimutu's clearest dawns: June to September. Wae Rebo: dry season, since the walk is steep clay. Komodo and the western boat trips: April to November. Diving at Maumere and Riung: April to October for visibility. Semana Santa at Larantuka: Holy Week, so late March or April, and the town fills completely — accommodation must be booked months ahead. Village ceremonies and caci cluster around harvests and church feasts and are not reliably predictable from outside.

Choosing

For an overland Flores trip: May, June, September or early October — dry-season conditions, open roads, and outside the Labuan Bajo peak. For Komodo alone: April to November. For lowest prices: the wet season, with real flexibility. Avoid January and February for any fixed schedule. And whatever the month, build in a spare day: this is an island where a landslide, a cancelled flight or a boat that does not run is a normal occurrence rather than a disaster.
