Where to Stay in Bali
Part of the Bali travel guide — see every topic in All Bali Guides.
The single decision that shapes a Bali trip is where you sleep, and it matters more here than in most places because the roads are slow: Seminyak to Ubud is ninety minutes, Ubud to Uluwatu two hours, and a badly chosen base can cost you four hours of a day in a car. There is no location that suits everything. The practical answer is to pick two bases for a week and three for ten days, and to choose each one for what is within twenty minutes of it.
The south coast
Seminyak is the polished middle: the island's best restaurant density, the boutique shopping, the original beach clubs, private-pool villas from around 1.5 million rupiah, and twenty-five minutes from the airport. Canggu is younger, surf-led and traffic-choked, with the best coffee and the largest long-stay community. Kuta and Legian are the cheap, loud, learn-to-surf end. Jimbaran is calm, has the seafood grills and is fifteen minutes from the airport. Nusa Dua is a gated resort enclave with a safe swimming beach and no atmosphere outside the gates.
Ubud and the interior
Ubud is the base for everything inland — the terraces, the volcanoes, the waterfalls, the craft villages — and for the island's cultural life. It is two hundred metres up, cooler and wetter than the coast, and everything closes by ten. The centre is congested; five minutes' walk in any direction is paddy or gorge. The Ayung river valley at Sayan and Payangan holds the island's most dramatic hotels. Ubud is the right first base for most trips and the wrong one if you came to swim.
The quiet coasts
Sanur is the best family base: a reef-protected lagoon you can actually swim in, a five-kilometre traffic-free beachfront path, short drives and boats to the Nusa islands. Amed and Tulamben on the east coast are for diving and for doing very little. Sidemen is rice terraces under Mount Agung with almost no tourism. Munduk is cool highland walking country at 800 metres. Pemuteran in the north-west has the reef restoration and Menjangan. All of these are cheaper than the south and further from everything.
How to combine them
For a week: three nights Ubud, two on the Nusa islands or in Sidemen, two on the coast. For ten days, add Amed or Munduk. For a first trip that wants one base only, Seminyak is the least-bad compromise — central for the south, ninety minutes from Ubud, an hour from Uluwatu — but you will spend real time in the car. Keep the final night near the airport, in Jimbaran, Seminyak or Sanur, because the road to Ngurah Rai in the afternoon is unpredictable.
