If Ninh Binh is “Halong Bay on land”, Trang An is where the comparison earns its keep: a UNESCO-listed maze of jade-green waterways threading between limestone towers, where rowers paddle small wooden sampans straight through the mountains via river caves. For long stretches the only sounds are oars and dripping cave ceilings. It is the region's flagship experience — and, remarkably, it still feels serene even on busy days.
On the Water
Boats leave the main wharf on a handful of set routes, each a two-to-three-hour loop combining caves, open lagoons and stops at tiny shrines and grottoes tucked under the cliffs; route boards at the ticket office show what each covers. The caves are the drama — some run for hundreds of metres, low enough that everyone folds flat while the rower threads through the dark.
Planning Your Ride
Go early — the first boats glide out onto still, misty water — or mid-afternoon once the day-trip wave from Hanoi has receded. Each sampan takes four or five passengers plus the rower, life jackets are provided, and there is no shade on the open stretches, so bring a hat and sunscreen. Tickets are sold at the wharf; most visitors pair Trang An with the Hang Mua viewpoint climb.
