Laptop or no laptop, the camera question, adapters, power-bank rules, eSIMs, and the one-bag-of-cords rule.
Travel tech has consolidated. Ten years ago a serious traveller carried a laptop, a separate camera, an MP3 player, a paperback, a paper map, a guidebook, and a clamshell phone for SMS. Today most of that fits on the phone, and the only real questions are which extra devices earn their weight and how to keep them all powered. The honest answer for most trips is: phone, charger, one extra cable, and one decision about whether to bring a real camera or a real laptop. Everything else is optional.

Laptop or No Laptop
The honest test is whether you will actually use it. If the trip is two weeks of beach and temples, the laptop will sit in the room safe and you will resent its weight. If you are working remotely, writing, or editing photos and video seriously, a laptop earns its place. The middle ground — a tablet with a keyboard — covers email, light writing, and Netflix on long buses, at half the weight and a third of the security worry.
A small caveat: in 2026, phones have become genuinely capable. A good phone with a Bluetooth keyboard handles trip planning, journaling, photo culling, and most light work. For a journalist or a developer, that is not enough. For a generalist traveller on holiday, it usually is.
The Camera Question
Modern phone cameras are extraordinarily good in daylight, competent at night, and small enough to carry without thinking. A dedicated camera earns its weight in three situations: low light (a real sensor still beats computational photography), telephoto (wildlife, architecture details, the rim of a temple roof), and the photographic discipline of a viewfinder — an experience the phone genuinely does not replicate.
The right camera for travel is small. A fixed-lens compact (the Ricoh GR III, the Fujifilm X100 series) or a mirrorless body with one prime lens covers ninety percent of what you will shoot, fits in a jacket pocket, and weighs under 600g. A full DSLR kit with three lenses is the wrong answer for a generalist trip and the right answer only if photography is the trip.
Universal vs. Region-Specific Adapters
The universal adapter is a compromise device — bulky, heavy, and prone to falling out of European wall sockets at three in the morning. For a single-region trip (Japan and Vietnam, say, both Type A) a single 15-gram region-specific adapter is the elegant answer. For a multi-region trip, the universal is forgivable.
A better answer for most trips is a small GaN charger with two or three USB-C ports and a region-appropriate plug. One brick charges your phone, your laptop, and your headphones simultaneously, and replaces the bag of wall warts you used to carry. 65W is the right size; 100W if you have a power-hungry laptop.
Power Bank Watt-Hour Limits
Lithium power banks are restricted on aircraft and the rule is the same almost everywhere: under 100Wh in carry-on, no checked baggage, no exceptions. 100Wh is roughly 27,000mAh at typical 3.7V cell voltage. Most travel power banks are 10,000 to 20,000mAh (37-74Wh) and fly without question. Anything labelled 30,000mAh+ is in the 100-160Wh window that needs airline approval, and 160Wh+ is forbidden in the cabin. The simple rule: stay under 20,000mAh and you will never be questioned. A 10,000mAh bank charges a phone twice and weighs about 180g, which is the right size for most travellers.
eSIM vs. Physical SIM
eSIM is the right answer for short trips and most countries. Airalo, Holafly, and Saily sell data-only eSIMs that you install before you leave home and activate on landing — no airport-stand queue, no language barrier, no risk of losing your home SIM. The cost is about the same or slightly higher than local SIMs, and the convenience is significant.
Physical SIMs are still the right answer in three cases: long trips (a month-plus, where the cost difference matters), countries where you actually need a local phone number (Vietnam for Grab, Indonesia for GoJek, Thailand for some banking apps), and remote regions where eSIM coverage is patchy. The hybrid setup most travellers settle on is an eSIM for connectivity on arrival, swapped for a local physical SIM after the first week if needed.
Backup Strategy on the Road
The threat model is simple: phone in the ocean, laptop stolen at a hostel, camera card corrupted in Hoi An. The defence is redundancy, applied lazily but consistently.
- Photos: automatic phone backup to iCloud or Google Photos over hotel wifi. A small portable SSD (1TB, 70g) for camera RAW files, dumped every few days. The two copies live in different bags.
- Documents: scans of passport, visas, vaccination card, and travel insurance in a password-manager vault — accessible from any device with your master password.
- Money: two cards from different banks, kept in different places. A small emergency stash of US dollars in a separate pouch.
- Phone: a cheap backup phone (an old unlocked handset) at the bottom of the bag, with a copy of your eSIM ready to install.
The One-Bag-of-Cords Rule
Every cable lives in one small zippered pouch. One USB-C to USB-C, one USB-C to Lightning if you still need it, one short charging cable for the power bank, headphones, and the GaN charger. That is the entire kit. The pouch goes in the personal-item daypack on travel days and on the hotel desk on rest days. The rule is that no cable lives anywhere except the pouch — and the cable hunt at three in the morning before a 5am flight stops happening.
The right travel-tech kit is the smallest one that does the job. Most upgrades over the last five years have been about replacing things, not adding them. A phone, a charger, a power bank, an eSIM, and one camera or laptop is enough for almost any trip.
